Linear elegance

Director Sofia Coppola attends The Cinema Society & Nancy Gonzalez screening of "Meek's Cutoff"
at Landmark Sunshine Cinema on March 28, 2011 in New York City.

EN - I am pleasantly impressed with this simple and elegant outfit of Sofia Coppola. It is getting more and more difficult to find a look by which one can take inspiration, avoiding also the "circus effect" dangerously in ambush. This kind of images are like rare pearls, through which it is possible to learn the sublime art of mixing together sophistication and sobriety. Black cigarette trousers, grey sweater, white silk shirt... being wrong is impossible!

Like a swan

EN - My great grandmother (born at the end of the 19th century) used to make her daughters and granddaughters walk with a book upon their head; to do not let the book fall down means to have acquired a certain mastery in the way of walking.  A good bearing is reflected in a straight back, a fluent step and a clear lope; also the gestures and the position of the legs when seated are important revealing elements. With skirt or trousers, the top degree of the refinement is to do not cross the leg, keeping them - obviously - well closed. This position is also the best for the correct posture of hips and knees... a proof that the bon-ton rules do not come from the Moon but have deep roots in the experience. A piece of clothing of valuable quality and first-rate cut becomes a rag without any adequate bearing that enhances it. It is clearly possible to affirm also the contrary: even a potato sack worn by Inès de la Fressange or Mariacarla Boscono would seem haute couture. Aside the books on the head, the bearing is also innate, is something indefinable that completes the charisma of a personality. It is resulting incredibly charming doing the most banal action of the world... like going to empty the garbage.

Cat eyes

EN - I don't know the precise reason; it could depend on the shape of the eyes, on their colour or on the individual skill. There are women who seem to be born to wear the eye-pencil in the upper side of the eyes and, on the other hand, other ones who acquire a hypnotic magnetism simply thanks to a black line under the eyes.
Between these two categories, I belong to the second one, nevertheless I would really like to experiment with the captivating charm of the cat eyes. I should stand in front of a mirror and, with the make-up remover nearby, I should try and try again... it is just a matter of doing, with steady hand, an upward line in the upper side of the eye. Easier said than done. It is necessary to practice it... or, perhaps, a different eyes shape. Probably I will never find it out. In the meantime, among the other intentions, there is also the desire to learn how to make a decent chignon!

Semplice a dirsi, tremendamente difficile a farsi.

Clues of spring

EN - The mild air of these days, gradually longer, entices to the change, to turn over this fashion page - with us since many months by now - and to write a new one, lively like the season that is going to be protagonist.

EN - A round bag, two-colour ballerinas, a little blue dress, an orange lipstick, a green eye shadow... they are irresistible clues of spring, small revolutions of style perfect for this period during which it is too soon to replace completely the winter wardrobe with the spring/summer one, but not to begin a renewal.

EN - Anyhow, my really light-hearted cues of spring are these: riding again my beloved bicycle, enjoying the delicate vernal sun in the most chic outdoor cafés of the city and having long walks without destination, until the last ray of sunshine. Finally April, May and June: my favourite months!

IT - I miei indizi di primavera preferiti? Riprendere la mia adorata bicicletta, assaporare il delicato sole primaverile seduta nei bar all'aperto più chic della città e fare lunghissime passeggiate senza una meta precisa, fino all'ultimo raggio di sole. Finalmente aprile, maggio e giugno: i miei mesi preferiti!

Garçonne

Winona Ryder

Angelina Jolie

EN - Concerning the hair length, the women are divided into three categories: the supporters of the long hair, the devoted ones to the short hair and those who change the haircut with the same fickleness they have when they change the nail polish. Many women tried, at least one time in the life, the thrill of a short haircut. This experience was for some as a light on the road to Damascus, after years spent among untangling conditioners, hairdryers, brushes and chronic nervous breakdown; for others, on the contrary, it was an unforgivable mistake that must not be repeated any more.
The long hair is for sure the big classic par excellence however, even a woman beyond suspicion like Angelina Jolie tried, many years ago, a very short haircut, rather male. Enchanting Winona Ryder, since many years with jaunty short hair often adorned with hairbands. Gwyneth Paltrow, in Sliding Doors, left her insipid brunette long hair and she revived after a therapeutic session at the hairdressing salon where she got a highlighted  haircut, very glamour. The so famous and (apparently) ruffled haircut of Meg Ryan converted thousand of fans, who rushed to the hairdressing salon with a picture of her in the hands;  same destiny for Natalie Imbruglia with her sweet haircut characterized by a casual forelock and layered wisps. If one doesn't want to dare an excessively short haircut, may opt for a bob, like Charlize Theron, with her not so short haircut, fluffy and wavy. The latest addicted? Emma Watson, Carey Mulligan, Michelle William and let's also mention who transformed the hairstyle in a trademark, like Victoria Beckham and Agyness Deyn.
Don't be afraid that the short hair are too male, indeed there are essential differences: in a woman the contours are indefinite and absolutely not sharp, thanks to layered extremities and to the presence of wisps. A woman who chooses the short hair is aware of her womanliness and that her charm does not depend on the centimetres of her hair. The short hair liberates the face, enhances the features, brings out the neck and lightens the figure. It is also jaunty, vaguely rascal, terribly modern, but surely super-womanly too.

Meg Ryan

Natalie Imbruglia
